what is wrong with Nissan Micra 1994 Automatic gear box?

The Automatic gearbox on my wifes 1994 Nissan Micra just stopped drive to wheels. Engine runs fine no other problems. Fluid levels checked and OK. No warning, noises, bangs, whining or the like. Just packed up. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Is it worth repair or is it dead. Thank you.

Check for worn or contaminated brushes on powder clutch
clean or replace start engine with brushes removed and squirt brake or contact cleaner on the clutch slip rings

Brushes are located next to gearbox dipstick and retained by 2 bolts the assembly has a plug on it which will be needed to unplug.
easy job 1 hour max.

Unusual for auto transmission to fail without previous warning signs. Check whether linkage between lever and gearbox is actually doing anything.
