how can I tell if my horse trailer has electric brakes?

I recently bought a used horse trailer. I've hooked it up to the truck and plugged it in, everything is working, except we don't get anything on the brake controller indicating that it is hooked to a trailer (new controller so it should be good). so I looked under the trailer and the wires coming from the brake area are red and brown, there is no blue like I've read the electric brakes use. are the red & brown only for the lights? I'm stumped. my husband has been so good with helping me, but I think he is done :(
if it helps the trailer is a 1989 Kingston. thank you to anyone who can help!
