Television does not not switch on. The remote control does not work, the tv is on standby.

Today I obtained a free tv, same model, but does not power on. No lights at all. Cannot open it up at the moment as am in the middle of moving home, but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if so what they did to remedy it.
