Oil boiler smells after delivery of oil?

This is an old "Thorn Harcal 430" down firing boiler, which is working well. Problem is that there is a very strong smell of oil in the boiler lobby following a recent delivery of 200 galls of Kerosene. I have checked all the lines, unions etc. and there is no trace of a leak. This is not the first time that I have had this problem after buying oil from the same company - the other company I use mark the invoice as Domesticol 28 (sec?) I am wondering if perhaps I getting a heavier oil when I buy Kerosene from this company or perhaps the sudden increase in the head of oil is causing a problem for the elderly oil pump? Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks, Harry.

Hi Harry

Sorry that I can't help you about your oil smell but I wonder if you can help me. I have the same boiler, also working well but need to find some new fan impellers. Any suggestions as to where I might find some would be most welcome.

Many thanks

Elaine

Check to see if there is a slight spilage of oil after delivery. If 35sec oil incorrectly delivered the boiler would not fire correctly without various adjustments to the burner. Check if solenoid valve is passing after burner has stopped firing, the valve is easily dismantled, check for grit etc on valve seating.

Close. It was leaking from the spindle around the pump. The tight fit between the pump and blower prevented the oil dripping out for a while. Perhaps the old seals could not cope with the sudden increase in the head of oil. A couple of new O rings fixed the problem. Thanks anyway.
