how to fix a frozen handbrake?

paul, December 2007
Tried driving my Ford Focus with frozen handbrake, since I assumed 'naturally' that as the engine warmed it would unstick. After a couple of miles the brakes starting smoking, when I stopped the discs were literally red hot. Since the fuel tank is in the back, we made a shift exit. Called a tow truck and froze to the bone.
So I don't know about driving and waiting to hear a 'bang'. Perhaps it would be the last sound you ever hear.
I thought the full brake fluid container would have been more useful!

Is likely to be the cable frozen in which case you need to thaw it out and cake it in grease as much as poss and if that dont stop it happening then may need a new cable and plastic covering. Once water is in there its hard to get rid of.

Get your wifes hairdryer out the cupboard and heat the wheels up with it. This should do the job

It happens in frozen weather. Try backing up first. It should release after a try or two. Take it from an Alaskan do not put the brake on in really cold weather.
