i have a vaillant turbomax 242e which operates the central heating but will not switch to hot water any ideas

If your central heating is working, then your hot water problem lies with the diverter valve or the diaphragm within it.
If you live in manchester I could sort it out for you for £195 to supply and fit a new hydraulic diverter valve.
