How to repair a crack in a drum head?

I have a very old Tarahamara indian drum that has developed about a 2 inch crack in the head (goatskin) from being to dry.Is there any way to repair it. Replacement of the head is out of the question.Derald J Carr

I just read about a way to repair a hide drumhead. Google drumhead repair and on the first page choose Lion Drum head Replacement. On the bottom of this page is a description that involves getting a piece of hide from a leather shop, plain gelatin from the grocery store to make hide glue. Haven t done it yet but it seems like its worth a try

Hi,

There is no way of reapairing a skin as such, but have a suggestion for a patch up.

Use vascaline or some kind of petroleum based moisturiser on the outside of the skin to soften it. Then take it off and use some 'Duct' tape over the actual crack.

Thus the skin should be back to decent condition to stop it cracking again, and the tape covering the crack will be on the inside.

Hope this helps??
