There are chips on the edges of my drums. Can I still put on the skins?

There are chips on the edges of my drums. I'm afraid to put the skins on because I don't want to rip the skins or effect the sound. Some are small and a few are deep so I'm not sure what to do. Won't that affect the sound or damage the drum somehow? These are new Gammond drums. How can I fix them?

DO NOT listen to that PHIL person. It is not that simple to sand a bearing edge. Pitting or dings in this edge may require recutting the edge.

I would follow Julie's advice. Phil is not very wise in terms of drum repair.

Hi,
Firstly, if these drums are new I would be thinking about contacting the supplier/manufacturer and asking for replacements. If you feel that the damamge has been caused since purchase then I think it depends on the severity of the damage.
This part of the drum is called the 'bearing edge' and drummers talk for hours about bearing edge design and shape because it is important for the sound of the drum. You are right to think that the skins could be damaged if the edge is substantially damaged. I could make some suggestions but without seeing the extent of damage it is difficult to know. You may get a better answer at this site: http://www.mikedolbear.co.uk/forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=1
but you will first have to register.

Sand the rim down so its smooth, as long there inst any sharp points along the rim it should be fine1
