PS I should have said that your engine may well have contact breaker points that cause the coil to induce a current - they are hidden beneath the flywheel in a round aluminium container. As the flywheel rotates the CB points open and close and its important that the gap, when they are open, is set to 15 thou.

The coil has one thick wire that goes to the spark plug, and one much thinner one that is used to stop the engine when it is connected to ground - just make sure that this isn't happening when you try to start up. The numbers that you need to get a replacement coil should you need it are stamped onto the engine cooling cowl usually - there are three blocks of numbers and these are what you quote when ordering a new coil.
