Fiesta Diesel suddenly developed starting problem?

My 1998 1.8 Fiesta Diesel has suddenly become very difficult to start. The engine turns over fine but just wont fire. It was running and starting perfectly well and has just suddenly seemed to have developed the problem. It eventually starts but then wont rev straightaway. It almost feels like a fuel starvation problem. Once it is running it is fine. It restarts when warm no problems. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Changed the fuel filter and it seems to have sorted the problem. Thanks John.

I'd go for a new fuel filter first....if the filter/primer pump is on the right side of the block with a black button on, these things often get leaky diaphragms which allow fuel to return back to the tank - which I think is your problem.
