My PS2 started freeze-framing during GTA-Vice City and making a grating sound.Now it makes the sound as soon as the console is switched on, and it ignores the fact that a game has been inserted.(CDs included)
I tried to get the casing open but the 4 screws I located did not allow entry.

the same thing still happens to me when i turn on and turn off my ps2 it happened when i opened my ps2 to install a swap disk modification. but what i do is i put the cd in the disc tray before turning on the ps2 and it works

There are 8 screws on the bottom of a ps2. 4 are hidden under the rubber feet which you can easily get off with your finger or a screwdriver.

I too had a problem with my PS2 not playing anything, mine repeatedly clicked whenever a dvd/cd was inserted. If this is what you are getting your lens may need adjusting. Its easy to do - This guide sorted mine out http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

This is an easy one.Since I was the one with the problem -which I paid someone to fix....after having purchased a new PS2 incidentally ,I can tell anyone with the same symptoms that their laser has collapsed. It is a fairly inexpensive repair to remedy.It is nice to buy something new though.
