2000 vw bettle turn signals?

When I hit my turn signals, they flash once or twice and stop. I bought a new flasher bulb (a friend told me to) but, now I don't know how or where it goes. Should I have gotten a fuse instead? Where does it go? HELP!

Usually if a bulb fails the flashers will flash much faster on that side of the car. If a fuse has failed you will have no flashers at all. It sounds like the flasher unit that may have failed. (Do the hazard warning lights do the same?) This is a plug in unit about 2 inch square, the problem is locating it. It will probably be near the fuses. Have a look in the owners manual for 'flasher unit'.
