My lawnmower [Honda engine GCV 135] will not start?

Lawnmower engine will not start from cold. No obvious problems with petrol or ignition.Have tried encouraging it with WD 40 and it turns over for a few second and then dies.
Anybody with any ideas?

Can you please tell me if the on and off switch up and down or side ways

Check the diaphragm again. This is a common problem on these engines

I, too, had this problem. I found that it was a loose connection on the kill-switch. This is a push-on connector covered by a black plastic, insulating sleeve.

The connector was not pushed on to the metal switch connection, merely held in place loosely by the insulating sleeve. Visually it was fine but making a poor electrical contact....

I pulled it off and re-fitted it correctly. I haven't had a recurrence of the starting problem since then - I had tried all the above suggestions along the way!!

Well I drained float bowl into a Gattts jar (no water), cleaned behind the fuel cap rubber diaphragm (just a little loose stuff from a foam filter inside there), can get visible spark whenI remove the plug, thumb compression in the cylinder, shaft on pump connected to engine turns when I pull starter. Maybe I'll souse it with carb cleaner. Any other ideas?

I could start mine, but then engine goes unstable after just few minutes and stalls. After that almost not possible to start. Had the engine checked and carb cleaned by the dealer - didn't help. Was then advised NOT TO OVERTIGHTED the fuel cap!!! It did help actually! The rubber pad in the cap has some grooves that can be blocked once closed very tight.

i think it is knackered mate. They are a rubbish engine anyway. Your obviously a cheap skate and have bought a mower 'just to cut the grass' u could try buying a new one cris, this will solve the problem.

Drain carb float chamber. Chances are it has water in it.
