What can i do to boost performance?

what simple steps can i take to boost the sound and performance of my Mk3 Cavalier 1.8 GLSi? I've been told to change the spark plugs and change the oil filter but is that an easy job and will that make any REAL difference to the sound? I'd rather do the work myself and not have to purchase any other parts as I've shelled out on a sports exhaust but it hasn't had the desired effect i was looking for. I want it to sound more like a Subaru. Please help

Ps - I'm no mechanic. Please speak in Laymans terms

Hi Toby, doing a basic engine service will not give you any great performance improvement just make the engine run more efficiently better MPG for a more sporty sound replace the airfilter assembly with a K&N sports induction kit £80+ it will make a greater noise on acceleration but no amount of money will make a 14+year old rep mobile sound like a scooby!!!
