I take it your talking toilet cistern but then its much the same for the loft tanks.
Turn the water off feeding the cistern undo the water feed pipe on the ball valve undo the large plastic/metal ball valve retaining nut remove the ball valve complete with rod and float. Reverse process for replacement of new ballcock.
