Hotpoint Freezer wont freeze up even with Fast freeze on. It has totally defrosted now even though it is on.

I have been told it is the compressor or thermostat or needs gas, which is it most likely to be????

If you can hear the compressor running then its likely to be ok. If you are on fast freeze then the compressor should be running all the time until the low temperature is achieved. If the compressor is cutting in and out it could well be a thermostat problem. If the compressor is running continuously and it still won't cool down then either the system is down on gas or there is a door gap, letting warm air in.
