How do I replace spool on Toro 1100 weed trimmer?

How do I replace the spool on my Toro 1100 electric weed trimmer?

Yeah! This stuff worked! It's a bit hard to tell that the 'spool' part is actually two pieces that you need to separate in order to reinstall the line to the motor bit on the handle. Trying to screw it back in with the line on tended to use up 3 ft. of line.

Thanks, steveK. It works

glad to see that there is good advice for just about everything, including discontinued weed whackers. And I'm still able to find replacement spools online to boot. This old whacker still works fine. Thanks for being here, since 2008...

thank you guys.this is called collective wisdom.i put the screw driver in the slots and turned.the spool came out easily.

Yes, it worked for me. I just found one of the 2 slots on the hub of the spool (right underneath the metal clips) that has just enough room for the blade of a flathead screwdriver. Put the screwdriver in the slot, turned/twisted 1/4 turn and the spool just popped off.

holding the trimmer firmly in your left hand, grasp the center piece with your right hand. hold your toung slightly to the left inside your mount, and turn the center piece to the left (counter clockwise) until it feels like your eyeballs are going to pop out of your head. set the trimmer down. yell a couple of profane words at it, then pick it back up and try again. it should pop loose and come off

The manual says to insert the largest screwdriver that will fit into either hole on either side and twist it 1/4 turn and the spool will pop loose. I tried that and it worked the very first time.

Download a manual for your trimmer (model 51325) from the Toro web site at:

steveK is absolutly right: but I had to insert the screwdivers from both sides at the same time, then twist. And out it comes. Lee's recommendation of 'unscrew' the spool did not work for me. 'to get the string back through the hole' is no problem, but you have to do it before you pop the spool back into place.

Put a screwdriver into the little slot on either side of the black spool holder and just pry it down and it will just pop off.

steveK, July 2008
Marlene, think I figured it out. You keep turning the spool counter-clockwise and it will eventually unscrew. It takes quite a few turns to come off and probably the reason I didn't think anything was loosening but it is. You the can re-wrap new string around the spool and then put it back turning clock wise until tight. It's a challenge to get the string back through the hole but it can be done. It shows you on the spool which way to wrap the string. Mine keeps coming off but I think my spool is broken and maybe that's why. I'd be curious to know if you get the spool apart or get your trimmer working again. Please post if you see this.

I'm having the same problem..can't seem to get spool off?
