Ace hardware has motor brushes that will work. I just did this same repair and the trimmer is now working again. I bought the carbon brush without the springs and reused the originsl springs. I also had to file down the new brushes because they were too long. No big deal. It only took a few minutes for the whole repair.

I need the metal drive gear (the large one) for a u272 trimmer.

You won't get any- brushes have not been avaialble as a seperate component from motors for years. New motor only I'm afraid.
