Comodo offer a free Internet Security Suite nowadays which has excellent firewall, antivirus, etc and works a treat. Free as a bird as well and everything is laid out in easy to understand wording.

avg from free.avg.com is totally free. There is a paid suite which has other programs included, but as a standalone antivirus program avg is as good as you'll get.
