What to do when a DVD player keeps freezing / pausing?

I have my DVD player connected to my TV, and it worked great. At one point my TV broke and I did not use my DVD player for some time. After a few months I got another TV, but every time I play a DVD it keeps pausing or freezing. I don't know what to do? The DVD player never gave me any problems before, and its a Toshiba, DVD / VHS player.

The lens may just need to be cleaned. If it sat for some time, dust may have settled on the optics. Have you tried a DVD cleaning kit, available commercially in many electronics stores?
