Can i really fix my cordless batteries myself?

I have Dewalt 18v XRP batteries, saw somewhere i can fix them myself at home. Is this true? If so, how do i do it, is it safe, and is it really worth the time?

I have fixed Power Tool batteries before by re-soldering connections, but not very often will that work.
