I am told and have read that all I need do to change the washer in an Armitage Shanks bathroom sink tap, (shrouded head) is to unscrew the central nut in the top and slide off the head.

This does not seem to work. I have tried leverage with screw drivers. I feel any more force will break some thing. Any suggestions?

managed to unscrew eventually using a rubber glove & adjustables.
