Why are my windscreen wipers making a thudding noise?

When I switch on the wipers, they shudder and swipe in a slow motion then stop and I can hear a thuddering noise? The car model is a Vauxhall Corsa 51 reg
Can anyone help with answers please.

My Golf did this - found the bolts holding the motor were working loose and the linkage was locking up as the motor wobbled. You will have to open the bonnet and look around I'm afraid.
