How do I replace clutch pedal spring on '99Citroen Xantia?

On my way to work this morning my clutch gave way. There was a "pinging" sound the pedal went all the way in. I got the car off the road and on investigating found a little black metal fixture (spring?) which appeared to have sheared off. How can this be replaced without removing dash? If anyone can give me detailed instructions I would be most grateful.
