i have a chaffoteaux bayard 13 gas shower heater which runs perfectly when only the hot water tap is turned on but when the cold water tap is turned on to adjust the temperature the gas burner (not the pilot) goes off and does not come on again until the cold water tap is turned off.
any help would be appreciated

Don't know much about your system but it sounds like your pressure is being reduced to too low a level through your heater system when you turn on the cold. Have your water pressure checked. Hope this helps though it is only a guess.
