Can i Paint it?

I have a fitted unit in my bedroom and the paper that covered it, is now getting old and peeling off. Can i peel the rest of the paper off and paint the unit or will the paint just soak into it and not work? What should i do

Remove the old wallpaper completely, lightly sand the woodwork, apply some wood primer then paint it any colour you like.
