john deere model 185--starter motor stopped working?

John deere model 185, 46 inch mower, hydostatic, kawasaki fc540v 17hp engine won't turn over when switch is activated--brake pedal down, hydro control in neutral, pto switch off. No click--just silence. New battery doesn't help. Does it need new starter motor? Can I fix it myself?

Yes its the starter and solenoid. I have the same problem right now. I purchased a new starter and solenoid for 75.00 from ebay. Here is the link to the same outfit that is selling it on ebay. The have a phone nuber and it directed me to www.discountStarterandAlternator.com . You can buy it from them via ebay at 10 dollar discount and free shipping.

More likely to be the starter motor solenoid - follow the thick wire back from the starter and you'll find it. Assuming that all the safety interlock switches are working, of course!
