How to get the hook back in the plunger?

The hook connecting the plunger to the handle has come out on both sides. the plunger is now so low I cannot get it out to put the hook back in. I consequently cannot flush the toilet. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

this can be a fiddly job, i got away with this by using plastic

I've no idea what sort of flush system you have, but can't you pull the plunger back up by hand to allow you to reconnect?
