ATA = Advanced Technology Attachment
sometimes referred to as Serial ATA or SATA
eSATA is for externally connected devices.

ATA is a standard that manufacturers define and adhere to
so it should be OK to use any ATA device - check with the vendor to be on the safe side.

Wikipedia has lots of technical stuff about ATA.
