How can I fix/diagnose clunk noise from front wheels thru steering column?

2000 Lexus LS400; 53,000 miles; all struts changed two weeks ago. Still have clunk/knock sound coming from front wheels felt through steering column when driven at any speed over certain bumps and dips. Any ideas how to diagnose and fix problem? Thanks.

remove front wheels and check for play in ball joints at top of suspension arms. try lifting joints up off the arm with a pry bar, whilst looking for movement in ball joint in the rubbers. any up or down movement mean they are worn. this would cause the noise described, and lexus's lexi?! are known for these ball joints to wear.
