we have a really old pine table but it has developed a crack in the table top. The table top is in 3 sections but it is nailed on.

Yes it is possible to fill cracks in wood - the crack is there because the nails have resisted the natural shrinkage of the wood across the grain. When you have it reparied make sure the table top is removed and re-fixed in a way that allows for this natural movement.
