BUT will start again if I tap the top of the door (near the display) even very gently.
Possibly the sound of a "tink" switching somewhere else in the machine when I tap the front.

What (& more importantly WHERE) is likely to be the problem? It behaves like a loose connection, perhaps some soldering needed??

Door switch is marginal. Look for where closing the door pushes against the switch. It should be doing it firmly, not lightly. It may need to be bent in or realigned.
