how do i get my renault 19 petrol 1.4 to start?

renault 19 1.4 petrol: when i turn the key in the ignition the lights on the dashboard come on but no sounds and it doesnt start. i believe its the wire between the engine and starter motor as this has happened alot. need to know where to locate this wire and how to tighten it. also had this wire replaced but still comes loose how do i stop this happening as i get stranded with 3 small kids!!!!

(Sorry, I should have mentioned: the solenoid is an integral part of the starter mechanism.)

The solenoid in my 19 has failed almost completely. That could be the problem. You'll need a small hammer or similar. Reach down behind the engine and look for a light-coloured metal object about the size of a tin can. (Or you could ask someone to find it for you, I don't have the car here to give better directions.) Tap it vigourously with the hammer and see if that works. The solenoid has only one moving part and it can become stuck, this should dislodge it.

Hope that helps.

follow big red wire from battery to starter motor. starter can be at back or front of engine. check its tight at battery then on starter. 13mm nut usually on starter. it should not keep coming loose. someone may have over tightened nut, causing stud with nut on to loosen. will need starter repair or replacing if this is the case.
