Zanussi fridge freezer problem? Freezer has suddenly started to defrost?

The freezer has suddenly started to defrost yet the fridge compartment appears to be OK.
The RED warning light for temperature is flashing.
Immediately to the right of this light is another light with the letter S above. This light is out. Should this light be on?
Silver Zanussi ZX purchased in 2001.
