How can I get the sand out of my Caplio R5 camera?

My Caplio R5 got dropped while on holiday recently. It got sand in the lens mechanism which is now stopping the lens moving freely. In fact, it will not retract when switched off and does not focus. Has anyone tried cleaning sand out of a lens mechanism?
