i was changing the water pump on my 98 malibu, when i attempted to turn the crank shaft it turned but the cams did not how can i reset the timing?

WHat engine is it >? Almost sounds like a quad 4
Timing mark on cams are done by having dowel pins in housings on both cams and crank settings are marked .......be careful that before you start it you turn it over by hand or you will bend all vavles
