Could be dirty tape end sensors or mode switch. End sensors located on deck at front of cassette carriage. Mode switch much more involved attached to loading motor.

Chances are that you have a broken belt for the take up spool. You may be able to look inside, UNPLUG the unit from the oulet , then remove the top or bottom plate, you will be able to see if the belt is broken.
