Machine will not 'agitate'?

Hi all,
I have a Hoover 700LC 7kg top loading washing machine.
It does all the other actions like it is supposed to...except begin the agitate cycle. It fills, rinses drains etc...but the agitator action is NOT happening.
Any clues please??
