I want to replace the lighting dimmer switch in my Dining Room. Socket is set in the wall.

isolate the electric supply remove screws from switch disconnect wires going into dimmer then reconnect into new making sure you use the same connections as before

dimmer switch not dimming lights

rudy alleyne, May 2010
I can't beleive I was stupid enough to employ a sparky to do this for £70!!
The problem for those of us not in the know is that all the lights serving the switch can blow and yet the fuse box does not show a fault.
It's easy peasy to buy another single or double dimmer just turn off the power and relace the same way.

Turn the power off, unscrew th dimmer, unscrew the 2/3 wires, and get a new one and do the same procedure in reverse.

Even though it is set in the wall, there will almost certainly be two small screws holding it on. They may be hidden behind a clip-on escutcheon plate. Then you will find two wires. Don't forget to have the power off though. If yuou haven't done this sort of thing before, think about a professional.
