Inserted images keep disappearing while I'm working on the document. Nudging the position reveals a box outline and may restore the image. Switching to print preview also reveals the image but it also disappears again from this view. The images do print out however. Windows XP professional 2003. MS Office 2002 OEM Professional. Hi,

It could be that the preferences have been changed for displaying picture placeholders rather than pictures. This is handy if you're working on a particularly graphical document.

Go to Tools -> Options

With the view tab highlighted, make sure that the tick is removed from the Picture placeholders option.

Click ok, and your pictures should reappear.
