I have an Epson Stylus Color 600 printer which used to print photos properly. Now there are horizontal lines across the image. I have tried to clean it using the utilities provided, but these don't seem to have any effect. Is there a way to get at the print head to brush it which alcohol?

It sounds like you have ink buildup on your print heads. I had the same problem. See this post:
