repainting old artex?

Hi all my ceilings are artexed which I happen to like although I would like to repaint them as they have yellowed. I would like to know how to prepare/clean them before painting to avoid flaking etc. It looks quite matt so i'm assuming it's been emulsioned previously.Thanks

if the artex has been painted before use a cleaner called SUGAR SOAP available at DIY stores
just mix a small amount with water and rub over with a sponge once clean and dry repaint with normal emulsion
