I have unhooked the clip but the bulb is still being held in the holder. I have tried turning and am worried I will damage the fitting by pulling it

With most spotlights you don't have to "get into" them, you just change the bulb.
If there is a clip to unclip, unclip that and let the bulb fall down, otherwise just give it a quarter turn anticlockwise.
