Pioneer CDJ 1000 MK1 ?

My Pioneer CDJ 1000 will only play in CDJ mode. If I switch it to VINYL whilst playing the deck just stops. It will not start/play in VINYL mode at all apart from manually. Is this a fault I can fix myself or is it a specialist/expensive problem?
