dvd (thomson tv/dvd 28wt25u) does not play dvds?

the dvd works but only plays cds which only contain music,but it does not play dvds which contain video information

Are these CD's made on a computer or actual DvDs. Most DvD players only play .mpeg extensions. You can get programs that also will make VCD's, but basically all it does is convert it to .dat files, which are the same 'format' as .mpeg ones.
