clutch peddle Freelander?

I have a 2001 1.8 petrol Freelander and the clutch peddle frequently does not return to it's original position when pressed especially when going into reverse. When this happens I'm stuck in gear and have to stall the car and manually lift the peddle to get out of gear. Any idea what is causing this problem and how do I fix it?
