I have been getting black smears on items and can only assume it is from a folded over part of the rubber seal next to the drum . You can see loose dirt but cleaning does not seem to help. Is there a way to take the seal out to clean it so it can be done properly, rather than just moving the dirt araound.

If you put washer on with half a bag of soda crystal at a boil wash it should clear up the problem as the problem is in the tub, if it is an oil based mark and your machine is noisy you bearing is needing replaced, the black dirty mark round your door seal is caused because the machine is cold fill
