B&D strimmer - not working?

I have a B&D electric strimmer - the wire ran out, so I went an purchased a replacement (dual string) - I noticed that the old wire was wrapped around the inside of the motor, so decided to take the whole thing apart, get to the motor, and unpick the wire.
I undid the screws on the handle, took off the black safety gaurd, ended up with the motor took out got most of the wire off, but not all of it. put it back together again, plugged it in, and it no longer works.
no sparks to indicate something blowing, no clicks to suggest something isn't firing right, nothing obvious.

any ideas?

Thanks

a further update:
the switch works - I took it apart, and checked.
The motor worked for a while, only it cut out again.
when the pastic cover is taken off, you can see sparks between the magnets (stator) and the rotor - is this right?
