I had same problem - wiring harness goes thru the left freezer door hinge at the bottom. Harness was improperly tied too tight to the frame and with repeated opening of the freezer door over the years, the wire controlling the dispenser broke.
They can only fix by replacing the door. I called KitchenAid and complained about a $700 repair for a 4 year old fridge and they replaced it free of charge
