Please can somebody tell me if after using a water based gloss paint on a door, can I switch to a solvent based paint for the top coat.

If the water based finish is sound then there is no reason why an oil based gloss cannot be used. If the water based finish is not sound then remove any loose paint and sand lightly all over so as to remove any sheen. This will provide a KEY for the next coat. Rub down with white spirits after sanding to remove any dust before applying the next coat.
